Group sees rise in bankruptcy and insolvency enquiries

There has been a large rise in the number of people who have had to seek insolvency, new figures have shown.

Statistics published by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service reveal that 39,663 of those who approached were advised to seek insolvency, with 20,659 being in situations which warranted bankruptcy.

Delroy Corinaldi, director of external affairs at the organisation, claimed that the positive news about the economy as a whole has not reduced the number of people with debt problems in need of help.

He stated: "Although there [have] recently been positive signs in the economy, our figures highlight the high numbers of people with unmanageable debt, for which insolvency is the most appropriate solution."

Mr Corinaldi said that recent changes to the way that individual voluntary agreements are arranged could also make it easier for those seeking advice on this procedure to obtain it.

Earlier this month, Joseph Rowntree Foundation poverty research manager Chris Goulden claimed that more needs to be done to tackle poverty and debt problems.
