Govt 'must offer more help to families with debt problems'

The government needs to invest more resources in minimising the effects of poverty and debt problems on families facing financial difficulties.

Carena Rogers, policy advisor at the Family and Parenting Institute, has cited evidence showing that families under this type of pressure often see a deterioration of relationships.

She stated the importance of more support being given to these families and for them to be encouraged to take their share of the benefits which often go unclaimed.

A total of £16 billion has gone unclaimed by those families facing debt problems and the most challenging difficulties, she said.

Ms Rogers added: "Some families are still not claiming tax credits because they lost confidence in the system."

She explained: "People do not understand which benefits they are entitled to and are wary of being means-tested."

The Citizens Advice Bureau recently reported that 27 charities are calling on the government to improve take-up of welfare benefits.
