People on low income 'least likely to use the internet'

People with low incomes are failing to take advantage of the money-saving potential of the internet because they do not see it as important to their lives, claims new research.

Consumer Focus has found that the cost of being connected is not the only reason for low income groups being resistant to getting online.

Its report 'Broadband Minded' found that people have fears about identity theft and how having the internet in their home will affect relations with their family.

Following the research findings, Consumer Focus has called on the government to promote the internet in ways that appeal to low income groups that may be alienated by campaigns that only focus on money saving deals.

Many people on low wages do not have credit facilities and may find this irrelevant, according to the report.

Instead, it recommends that the government highlight how consumers could make money selling items on eBay, find jobs, do research for education and training and keep in touch with family and friends.
